When to Use a Credit Card

By: TaoCredit Staff Published: January 05, 2011

With a majority of Brits striving to pay off credit card debt, many are looking into different forms of payment.  Though this may seem to be the smart thing to do, there are still several compelling reasons to use credit cards.  Taocredit.com will discuss five of these scenarios where credit cards may be a better payment option.

Renting a car is one of the better reasons for using a credit card.  Most rental companies will require a credit card to book a car.  However, using a credit card to rent a car will have its own advantages.  Based on section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, car rentals over £100 will place equal liability to the credit card provider if something were to go wrong with the arrangements.  This would be especially beneficial when dealing with companies overseas.

Hotel reservations are also another excellent opportunity to use credit cards.  Credit cards are typically required to confirm a reservation.  Similar to car rentals, using a credit card to book a hotel will offer you the same benefits and protection provided by section 75 of the consumer credit act.

Using a credit card for company expenses may also have its advantages.  With many companies expecting their employees to pay for out of office expenses, credit cards make it easy for business owners to reimburse these expenses as well as keep a tab on their spending.

There are also sporting events where tickets require payment from certain credit card providers.  For example, the London 2012 Olympics tickets must be paid for using a VISA card.  Those who wish to view this once in a lifetime event will have to apply for a VISA card if they do not already have one.

Credit cards also allow individuals to build up their credit rating, receive rewards, and protect their purchases.  Using your credit cards and paying them on time can increase your credit score.  Certain reward-based credit cards can allow cardholders to earn cash or rewards by simply using the card.  Again, under section 75 of the consumer credit act, purchases of £100 will be protected.
